Improve your communication skills

Regardless of the size of business you are in – whether a large corporation, a small company, or even a home-based business — effective communication skills are essential for success. Indian students can become employable if they just improve their communication skills — this statement is no more just a myth. While communication is an important skill, the complete set of employment skills goes much beyond. In a PurpleLeap study across 198 colleges, it was found that more than 80 per cent of the students, who were found to be good in communication skills, still did not meet the ’employment-ready’ criteria.

Good communication skills are the first thing that employers and interviewers look for in a candidate. These can be either verbal or written communication skills but you must be able to prove that you can communicate and work alongside others in an excellent manner. In spite of the increasing importance placed on communication skills, many individuals continue to struggle, unable to communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively — whether in verbal or written format. This inability makes it nearly impossible for them to compete effectively in the workplace, and stands in the way of career progression.

Saml asked, Hello Amit, How do I keep out words that reduces the impact in an persuasive presentation ( example : trying, possible etc)

Amit Bansal answers, The best way is to not use them. However, for practice I suggest record a presentation and watch yourself using these words. If its very frequent then you will have to make a conscious effort to stop using them. Practice is the key.

rama1 asked, While speaking suddenly I am not able to recollect the correct word to be used in that context. How, to overcome this problem?
Amit Bansal answers, Maybe before you start talking about a subject mentally script it and repeat that script in your mind a few times. Soon this will become a habit. Also, spend time improving your vocabulary.

hari1234 asked, Sir i have my pronunciation infuenced by my mother tongue… to over come the problem
Amit Bansal answers, You need someone to help you with the pronunciation part. It is tough to do this all by yourself. However, there are internet resources which will help you correct your pronunciation for consonants and vowel sounds. I still feel seek a teacher to help you with this.

vijit asked, hello..when i speak i speak with fast pace and stammer also lot many times.How toovercome this ?
Amit Bansal answers, Record yourself first. I suggest use one of these tricks. Imagine yourself sitting on a rocking chair and speak at the same pace. Or, chew a chewing gum while talking. I suggest do this only for practice and not in front of others as it might look very rude. Now chew as you speak. This way you will chew your words and speak as well. Try tapping your hands in slow rhythmic beats while talking. This will also help you slow down.

Narendra asked, Is it the best way to read the the personality development books regularly to improve the fluency and communication skills
Amit Bansal answers, Fluency will come by speaking the language. Reading will help you improve your knowledge but not fluency.

Amit Bansal answers, You can use the online Thesaurus to build your vocabulary. Play crossword puzzles and other vocabulary games available free online.

rk asked, Mr.Amit Bansal, it is good that you are giving valuable advice. Would you please provide couple good books on communications skills for english language?
Amit Bansal answers, There are many many books available on communication skills and the likes. However, you cannot just read a book and learn to communicate. You need to practice and grab all possible opportunities to put the language to use.

ashokkumar asked, Hi sir, I speak english good.. but when i speak to a person , i cannot find words and feel struct.. How can i change that and improve myself?
Amit Bansal answers, Please practice. Read, do mirror practice. Find a friend you can do mock discussions with just to allow yourself to become confident. Only practice will help in getting rid of the hesitation.

vijji asked, What is best way to get/improve effective communication which helps in business or client Communication?
Amit Bansal answers, Presentation skills and improving your overall awareness about different areas is a good point to start. If you have enough knowledge about a subject you are conversing about it will be easier to communicate. Other areas like vocabulary and ability to write good emails also are things which make business communication effective.

dawood asked, i just hesitate to talk in front of my colleagues,when it comes to outsiders and at any other place i never hesitate.
Amit Bansal answers, Have you tried to explore the reasons why you find it difficult to talk in front of your colleagues? Once you delve further and find out why that happens maybe we can explore options to deal with the issue.

rk asked, Hi,what do you suggest for those who are in software and engineering to improve the communications skills?
Amit Bansal answers, Its the same process for everyone to improve their communication. Read, write and listen to the language you want to learn. Spend time speaking it with people and ask them for feedback. Language learning is a slow process and it’s important you give yourself time and at the same time keep investing the efforts.

Amit Bansal answers, It’s fairly normal to be nervous during an interview. I would suggest keep giving yourself that experience and very soon you will see yourself becoming confident. So just keep practicing.

Shivanand asked, Hi Sir,How to improve overall business communication(Mail Communication,Business Presentation,Meeting,Publications)…and once we start training ourselves …how to test ourselves..
Amit Bansal answers, You can test your presentation skills by recording yourself and reviewing your own presentations. With email communication maybe you can associate yourself with a mentor and ask them to review your emails and give feedback.

Suman asked, Hi Sir, I am good in english speaking and writing. However, my biggest disadvantage i have a narrow range of vocabulary. Please adive me how do i improve on this part
Amit Bansal answers, I suggest read good books and consciously learn new words. Write a new word every 3 days and put it up on your workstation. Start using it in your regular conversations. Once it becomes a part of your regular vocabulary it will remain there.

Amit Bansal answers, The best way to start improving your communication skills is to identify which area needs improvement.
