Dealing with conflicts in your team

At any workplace there will always be minor disagreements and differences of opinion. The way you handle conflict at the workplace can have a huge impact on how you are viewed as an employee. It can affect your entire career and it can say a lot about your character.

Conflict arises from differences, and when individuals come together in teams, their differences in terms of power, values, and attitudes contribute to the creation of conflicts. You can’t win a conflict at work. Winning a conflict means getting the outcome ‘you’ want regardless of what the ‘other’ person wants. Since the underlying issue has not been solved, it will simply reappear later. Hence it is much better to resolve a conflict than win it. Unresolved conflicts make people unhappy at work and can result in antagonism, breakdown in communications, inefficient teams, stress and low productivity.

Navin asked, HOD expectation is follow me (even incorrect decision) or find your own ways (resign). I do not care kind of attitude. Shall I talk to his senior for the problem that whole team is facing. I am managing my team very well and in confusion how to handle these kind of selfiesh high level leads in organization.

Amit Bansal answers, It is a good idea to talk about it, however blame storming would not be a great idea. Assertively bringing the issue to their notice and seeking their advice to resolve it might give you a good edge.


anshu asked, creating issue about the senior is the right option in IT Industry? or should I let go this issue?
Amit Bansal answers, Creating an issue is not good thing in any industry. However, communicating about something that is disturbing should be done.


udayshah asked, I am working in a small company as higher level. All the family members are directors and their age is below 30 years. They do not have harmony and transperant communication.Even they do not have good managerials experience.I am not able to perform my duty in such enviornment. How to handle such situation.
Amit Bansal answers, There is no limit to aspirations. If you are happy with what you do, I think that is what should really matter.


Nash asked, Hello Amit, My boss (our CEO) is a two timer man. He plays games from both sides of the table as he is the intermediary between our MD & his immediate managers. On one hand, he will show us that the management does nothing for us & we have to work hard to get what we want & on the other hand he takes our (manager’s) credits to himself in front of the Board of Directors. Its very difficult to pin point him exactly as he’s too smart to skip away any criticism that comes on him. As he usually blames the management in front of his staff orelse he will blame the staff in front of the management & MD. We have tried best to expose him in front of the management but in vain as he continues to dominate us this way. Please suggest a way to handle this guy or how to deal with him either way ? Nash
Amit Bansal answers, Well, a good way would be to do all communications via emails. Do not entertain any verbal requests or verbal instructions. Request your boss to send you an email or you initiate an email saying, ‘as per our discussion’ or ‘as per your instruction’. Basically establishing accountability for all tasks. Also, start marking key emails to your management to keep them in loop. Hopefully this will help however also bear in mind that this is not going to turn around things for you immediately give it time and I am sure you will get positive results.


anshu asked, My senior did not follows work timing.coming late to office and leaving early to home.Its suffers me a lot as all the work lot is on me.I can not esclate this issue with senior as he managed then accroding to him. How i overcome this?
Amit Bansal answers, You must discuss it either with your manager or their manager. I do not think this is a very good situation where because of someone else’s indiscipline you have to suffer.


Avin asked, I have started a new company. And I am very much afraid about employees spoiling this venture in order to soothe their ego with each other. How to create a healthy environment where everyone helps company to grow.
Amit Bansal answers, You are anticipating negative even before it has happened. Any specific reason for it? A healthy environment is created by creating a non threatening environment. Allowing creativity and freedom of expression. I am sure you will be able to create a good work culture in your new venture.


Navin asked, How to handle my lead who directly interact with my team members. I requested him many time but he does not listen.
Amit Bansal answers, Why is this a problem?


Navin asked, How to handle HOD’s who misuse the power because self interest is very high and do not give much scope for immediate leads to grow. If they raise the concern he sideline them and make then insecure.
Amit Bansal answers, If that’s the prominent work culture in your organization, then it’s very unhealthy. Do you not see any growth prospects? or are these prospects sabotaged by seniors?


mk asked, How can a conflict with immediate manager be managed?
Amit Bansal answers, Communication is the only way. Talk about the situation with your manager and try and resolve it with them. Remember difference of opinion is just a difference it’s not right or wrong.


kavita asked, Hi Amit, How to handle people with a bossing around attitudle. they are rude with unpleasant gestures most of the time.
Amit Bansal answers, You must let them know that their behavior is intimidating. Usually doing this over a one on one communication is good. Do not pick on them in public. However letting them know about their disturbing behavior is very important.


Ravi asked, Hi Amit, How to manage people in team, who is elder then manager/Tl? Any 3 key points you would like to share?
Amit Bansal answers, Give them their due respect would be one. Because every individual wants to be respected. Ensure they don’t feel threatened by a less experienced person so give them key responsibilities if they are capable of executing them and finally they should feel belonged to the team and organization along with an individual growth plan.


Ajay asked, How to handle the situation when team member try to over cross team leader and trying to directly deal with manager and also what could be the reason(for an instance sending mail directly to manager without keeping team leader in loop)
Amit Bansal answers, I think you need to have an understanding with your manager asking him to help you build a healthy team culture. Ask him to tell your team members to get in touch with you first before sending requests to him. However, just as a way to create transparent work culture you can let your team members cc your manager if they like. This will help them build trust in you. Because the idea is to keep you in loop and not create a hierarchy protocol.


Mayank asked, Hi Amit, How do you manage a situation where 2 senior Pros have their own point of views both of them are correct from their view point nad you can implement only one , is their a mid way
Amit Bansal answers, Even if there is no midway, you must let the two people know that both their ideas are much appreciated however the situation and time right now demands you to take one of the ideas. Giving appropriate logic and reason as well as an intention to not put down any of the two people will sure help you tide over this situation.


Harkesh asked, Hi, Amit. 2 year back i have started my own business, not doing well. But, i htis time my all colleage has double mtheri salaries and now i am finding difficult to get the Jpb of same level.
Amit Bansal answers, It’s a tough situation however if you are seriously looking for settling in for a job then you will have to start somewhere. I agree you will not have a salary matching your other college friends. But I am sure you can prove yourself and mover faster than others.


Lotus asked, Hi Amit, It has been found that resources with high years of experience joining the team has problems in being evaluated by resource who has less years of total exp, but has been in the project for long. How to handle such conflicts
Amit Bansal answers, Creating a healthy balance is important in such circumstances. Using right words like saying “a team member will collaborate with you rather than saying a team member will evaluate your work”. Instead of making one on one accountability matrix have multiple people collaborating with each other for different tasks. This helps an individual to feel less threatened and it feels more like a work culture than a hierarchy.


sharan asked, Hi Amit, How to work with the people who think always they are right and bossing even though they are colleagues?
Amit Bansal answers, Assertive communication helps. The first thing to understand here is that when people think they are right, it’s just an opinion and everyone is allowed to have an opinion. Next thing is to help them understand your perspective with conviction. The last part is to be okay even if they do not understand your perspective because it’s their choice. Similarly, you have a choice to say NO if you feel you are being taken for granted. However, by being assertive and not passive or aggressive about the entire situation. Hope this will help.


aslam asked, dear amit, how do i impress upon my colleagues that nitpicking and bitching harms the team more than anything else?
Amit Bansal answers, I suggest create some time within your team for team bonding and collaborative activities which may not necessarily be work related. It is found that a lot of time when the team members bond outside work they become better coworkers. However also bearing in mind that not everybody will adapt to the learning quickly. Some will learn fast others will take time to understand the art of team bonding. In any case I would recommend you start this initiative.


Dipti asked, conflicts are important, rather essential in a positive work-group.But how to manage them, when it is in good people?
Amit Bansal answers, The best way to handle conflicts is to deal with them at the stage of disagreement. It’s difficult but if you work on the premise that all people are good and disagreements is wrong or right but just a difference of opinion it becomes rather easy to handle them.
